Adrian Gardner (Cobham 61)

Adrian writes, “Here is a recent photo of the beams in the top dormitory in the main block of Cobham House. In my days as a pupil here 1956-1961, strong ropes hung from the central beam to which were attached large rings. The idea was to grab hold of these and swing back and forth and if you were sufficiently daring (foolhardy?), you could gain sufficient momentum for your feet to touch the far beam at the front and sometimes the one at the back. I managed the front beam just the once much to everybody’s surprise including that of my Housemaster who happened to walk in at that precise moment! I would love to hear from anyone who remembers these times, so do please contact me via
