OS Mentoring Success

The Old Stoic Office can match up recent leavers with an OS Mentor in an industry which sparks an interest. If you would like to find out more about this programme, please visit: www.stowe.co.uk/school/old-stoics/member-services/os-mentor-programme

Isabelle Berner (Queen’s 13) wrote about how the Mentoring Programme worked for her:

“I was just finishing my second year at Newcastle University and was incredibly keen to complete a placement year for my third year. I particularly wanted to complete this in the TV industry as this is the line of work I wish to go down. I was really struggling to find companies or contacts that were hiring any placement students. This is when I decided to contact the Old Stoic Society to see if they had anyone who might be on their records. I was so pleased because I received quite a lot of interest. Within the first week, at least six Old Stoics emailed me back. One of these contacts was Fox Asia presenter Jason de la Peña (Bruce 91). In the email he wanted to FaceTime me to find out more about me and what I wanted to do. In this FaceTime conversation, he mentioned how he was working at Wimbledon and asked if I would like to come along for the day.

So, on the first Tuesday of Wimbledon, I went to London and spent the day in the Fox Asia TV studios. It was such a great day and I learnt loads. I saw Jason conduct live interviews and report/commentate on the live tennis. It was fantastic. On top of this I was also lucky enough to meet everyone behind the camera. The camera woman, producers, directors, editors – you name it I met them. It really was such an educational and fun day at Fox Asia with Jason de la Peña.

I would recommend any student to contact the Old Stoic Society looking for work experience.

As for my placement, he has put me in contact with a few people he knows who may be hiring. Fingers crossed!”
